Crater lake views above the clouds
“Best just before sunset”
At 3,432 metres, Irazú is Costa Rica's highest volcano and the only place in the country where — on a perfectly clear morning — you can see both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans simultaneously. The main crater holds a jade-green lake whose colour shifts with the light and weather. The lunar landscape of grey ash and sparse vegetation gives the summit an otherworldly atmosphere. Come before 10am before the clouds roll in, and dress in layers even in dry season.

Got there at 6:30am in perfect conditions — the crater lake was jade green and we could see both oceans. This is a once-in-a-trip experience. Go on a clear weekday morning.

The crater itself is impressive but the approach road is rough. Worth the effort. Dress warmer than you think — it's seriously cold and windy at the summit.
