The village of Tortuguero has no road connection to the rest of Costa Rica. The fishermen navigate the canal network by sight and memory — they have been reading the water their whole lives. They leave before 4am, set line and net in the dark, and return by 8am before the tourist boats appear. The village dock at first light is a scene of quiet professional work with no audience in mind.
