Six turquoise pools of volcanic mineral water — each a different temperature
“Something different happens before 9am”
The Blue Falls of Costa Rica are a series of six swimming pools fed by springs that carry volcanic minerals — primarily sulphur compounds and silica — from the Miravalles volcanic system through the groundwater and into the surface streams near Bijagua. The mineral content turns the water a turquoise-to-cobalt colour that is permanent, not dependent on sky reflection or angle of light, and varies slightly between pools depending on the concentration of minerals in each spring source. Each pool maintains a different water temperature, ranging from cold mountain spring to warm volcanic-heated water, which creates the unusual circumstance of being able to move between thermal environments over a short walk. The site is privately operated with limited visitor numbers, accessed by a trail through cloud forest above Bijagua. The colour of the water against the dark volcanic rock and the surrounding cloud forest vegetation is the defining visual quality.
