Two-tier 45-metre falls, three hours deep in the jungle south of Dominical
Cataratas Nauyaca stands as one of Costa Rica's most dramatic waterfall systems, featuring a powerful two-tier cascade that plunges 45 meters into a crystalline natural pool surrounded by dense tropical rainforest. The lower basin invites swimmers to immerse themselves in cool, refreshing waters while the misty spray creates an almost magical atmosphere, especially during the wetter months when water volume peaks. Accessed via a moderate hike through jungle terrain between Dominical and San Isidro de El General, the falls reward visitors with both adventure and tranquility in equal measure. The remote location ensures fewer crowds than more famous Costa Rican waterfalls, making it ideal for those seeking authentic natural beauty without the tourist infrastructure.
You'll encounter a dramatic two-tier waterfall system with an upper 45-meter drop and a lower 20-meter cascade that feeds a large natural swimming pool surrounded by dense tropical rainforest. The hike or shuttle ride takes you through remote jungle terrain, and the remote location means significantly fewer crowds than Costa Rica's more famous waterfalls. Swimming is only permitted in the lower pool; the upper falls are off-limits due to falling rocks, so plan your time accordingly. The 4-kilometer distance from the office to the falls means you must choose between hiking (budget but strenuous), a 4x4 shuttle (most popular), or a guided horseback tour with meals included.
Accessibility
The steps down to the swimming pool are steep and slick, which may pose challenges for those with mobility limitations.
Best Time to Visit
Visit during the wetter months (May–November) when water volume peaks and the misty spray is most dramatic, though the dry season (December–April) offers easier hiking conditions and clearer skies for photography.
What Changes Through The Year
Dry Season (Dec–Apr)
Hiking conditions are easier with less mud and humidity, and skies are clearer for photography, but water volume is lower and the mist effect is less pronounced.
Green Season (May–Nov)
Water volume peaks and the misty spray creates a more magical atmosphere, but the hike is hot, humid, and muddy; humidity and afternoon rains are common.
Getting There
From Dominical, head inland on Route 243 for approximately 10 kilometers (20-minute drive). The main office and parking lot are located right off Route 243. From there, you must take a 4x4 shuttle, hike, or horseback tour to reach the falls 4 kilometers away.

The most rewarding hike we did in Costa Rica, and we did a lot of them. The trail is long and warm but the forest changes as you go deeper and by the time you arrive the pools feel completely earned. The upper falls put Niagara to shame for sheer atmosphere. We stayed three hours. Nothing about it was disappointing.

One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Central America and barely known outside of the region. Six hours round trip but every hour of it is through varied jungle with birds, butterflies, and near the end the sound of the falls guiding you in. The pool at the bottom is cold and magical. We swam for 45 minutes. Bring lunch.

Incredible place but the logistics matter. The horseback option leaves at 7am from the trailhead outside Dominical — book ahead in high season. The trail is not marked; most people hire a local guide. The falls are everything they promise but the effort is real. Not a casual half-day.
