One of Costa Rica’s most famous eco-attractions, located in the cloud forest between Poás Volcano and Sarapiquí
La Paz Waterfall Gardens showcases five cascading waterfalls plunging through lush cloud forest in Heredia Province, each accessible via well-maintained trails that wind through native vegetation and past wildlife exhibits. The site combines natural wonder with curated gardens featuring hummingbirds, sloths, serpents, and frogs in naturalistic settings, making it one of Costa Rica's most accessible yet immersive rainforest experiences. Morning visits reward you with the clearest views and most active wildlife, while the cool mist from the falls provides relief from afternoon heat. Located about 90 minutes north of San José via scenic mountain roads, it's ideal year-round, though the green season (May-November) brings fuller water flows and vibrant canopy activity.
Walk 3.5 km of paved trails through cloud forest to reach five cascading waterfalls, each with viewing platforms that bring you close to the water and canyon views. See wildlife in curated naturalistic exhibits—hummingbirds, sloths, frogs, snakes, toucans, monkeys, jaguars, and butterflies—all in one location without deep jungle trekking. Plan morning visits for the clearest waterfall views and most active wildlife; the cooler mountain elevation and mist from the falls provide natural relief from heat.
Best Time to Visit
Visit December–April for the clearest views and least rainfall, arriving by 8–9am before tour groups crowd the trails and viewpoints. May–November brings lush green canopy and powerful waterfall flows (especially September–October after heavy rains), though morning mist can obscure photography—go immediately at opening or late afternoon when mist clears. Avoid weekends and school holidays when families pack the gardens; weekday mornings offer the best wildlife viewing and solitude.

What to Bring
Who This Is For
“Arrive before 8:30 AM to avoid afternoon mist that obscures waterfall views and to encounter peak wildlife activity, particularly hummingbirds at the garden feeders. The facility closes by 5 PM and morning light is essential for photography.”

Beautiful but gets crowded by 10am on weekends. Go early or on a Tuesday. The gift shop is surprisingly good and the restaurant views are worth lingering for.

Absolutely breathtaking. Arrived at 7am and had the lower falls completely to ourselves — the mist was still hanging in the tree canopy. The trail is well-maintained and the wildlife is exceptional.

One of those places that photos don't do justice. The sound alone — five distinct waterfalls converging — is meditative. Bring a jacket even in dry season.
