Hidden cove accessible only at low tide
“Worth coming mid-week”
Playa Escondida earns its name — the cove is completely invisible from the main beach and can only be reached by scrambling around a rocky headland at low tide. What waits inside is a crescent of white sand enclosed by jungle-draped cliffs, with water so clear you can see the coral formations in 6 metres of depth without a mask. Sea turtles nest here between July and November, and the early morning light creates a scene of rare tranquillity before the day-trippers discover it.

Found this on a tip from our boat captain. At low tide we scrambled around the headland and found ourselves completely alone in a perfect cove. Snorkelling was outstanding — sea turtles, parrotfish, an octopus.

Magical but requires planning — check the tide tables on the Quepos station website before going. The walk around the headland is slippery; wear water shoes. Absolutely worth it.
