Dark volcanic sand beach north of Santa Teresa — consistent surf, fewer visitors
“Worth timing for the last hour of daylight”
Playa Hermosa is the beach immediately north of Santa Teresa on the Nicoya Pacific coast, sharing the same dark volcanic sand and reef structure but receiving a fraction of the visitor traffic that concentrates on the more developed Santa Teresa beach to the south. The beach break here is consistent through the dry season and the rocky headland at the northern end produces a sheltered section where the wave energy is reduced enough for swimming. The volcanic sand is dark grey to black, which absorbs heat during the day and makes the beach noticeably warmer underfoot than the white-sand beaches of the north Pacific coast. The surrounding vegetation comes close to the high tide line — palms, tropical almonds, and the occasional manzanillo tree whose shade is desirable but whose falling fruit is toxic. The road access is unpaved and narrows further north of the main Hermosa stretch, which effectively limits vehicle access and keeps the northern sections quiet.
