A volcanic canyon in white limestone with thermal pools at the river's edge — remote, 4WD only
“A different place on a quiet Tuesday”
Río Perdido has carved a canyon through the white limestone and obsidian of the Guanacaste highlands, producing a gorge with walls that alternate between pale sedimentary rock and black volcanic glass exposed by the river's erosion. The river runs through the canyon floor between thermal pools where volcanic springs enter the water at different points — some sections river-temperature, others warm enough to sit in for extended periods. The site is privately operated with limited daily access and requires a 4WD vehicle on the unpaved track from Bagaces. Once inside the canyon the scale is disorienting — the walls are high enough to put the sky into a narrow strip above, and the pale rock reflects the light in a way that makes the canyon floor brighter than the surrounding dry forest plateau above it. Thermal pool access, a zip-line over the canyon, and kayaking on the river sections are the activities offered; the canyon itself is the reason to come.
