Considered one of the most luxurious and iconic hot spring experiences in Costa Rica
Tabacón Hot Springs represents a living bridge between indigenous geothermal knowledge and contemporary wellness practice, where naturally heated mineral waters emerge from the earth at varying temperatures throughout the rainforest canopy. The experience centers on bathing rituals in cascading thermal pools fed by underground rivers, their warmth intensifying the sensory richness of primary forest—the mineral scent mingling with wet earth and dense vegetation. This thermal culture has persisted for generations, rooted in both practical medicinal use and spiritual renewal practices that predate colonial settlement. The cooler evening hours offer the most immersive atmosphere, when mist rises from the pools and the forest soundscape dominates. Each visit becomes a slow immersion in the convergence of geological and cultural time.

How to Participate
Visitors access Tabacón Hot Springs through the resort property in La Fortuna. Day-use passes allow access to the thermal pools and grounds; overnight guests have unlimited access. Entry typically includes access to multiple pool areas at different temperatures.
Best Time to Visit
Visit in early morning (6–8am) during green season (May–November) when fewer tourists are present and the contrast between hot springs and cool mountain air is most dramatic. Avoid midday when tour groups arrive in peak waves between 10am–2pm; late afternoon (4–6pm) offers a good alternative with softer light and moderate crowds.
When to Experience
Year-round daily access. Evening hours (late afternoon through evening) offer optimal mist and atmospheric conditions.
What to Expect
Who This Is For
“The hottest pools (often exceeding 40°C) cool progressively as water flows downstream through different pool levels—locals time their bathing to start in cooler pools and gradually acclimate to hotter ones rather than jumping directly into the hottest sources, which reduces thermal shock and extends comfortable bathing time.”
