One of Costa Rica's most remote and spectacular coastal regions
Bahía Salinas ranks among Costa Rica's most remote and windswept coastal destinations, a raw northwestern frontier where powerful seasonal winds transform the bay into a playground for water sports enthusiasts. Located near the Nicaraguan border in Guanacaste, this shared binational bay combines world-class kiteboarding conditions with pristine, secluded beaches and remarkable marine ecosystems rarely crowded with tourists. The region's rugged landscape and isolation mean it rewards visitors willing to venture off the main tourist circuit, particularly during the dry season (December to April) when trade winds peak and visibility is exceptional. Turquoise waters teem with tropical fish, rays, and seasonal whale sharks, while the sparse settlement of La Cruz provides a gateway to both water adventures and untamed coastal exploration.
Bahía Salinas transforms into a world-class kiteboarding and windsurfing destination during peak wind season, with the Papagayo winds creating consistent 25 mph conditions and flat-to-choppy water suitable for both beginners and experts. Despite its international reputation, the bay remains remote and uncrowded—typically hosting only 10 to 25 kiters at a time—with established schools like Kiteboarding Costa Rica and Blue Dream Kiteboarding Resort offering rentals, gear, and certifications directly on-site. Plan your visit between November and May when trade winds peak and visibility is exceptional; the bay's isolation rewards those willing to venture away from main tourist routes to access secluded beaches and marine ecosystems including seasonal whale sharks, dolphins, and the protected Isla Bolaños Wildlife Refuge.
Best Time to Visit
Visit December through March for calm, warm waters ideal for swimming and water sports, with minimal rain and fewer crowds than central beaches. Early morning (6–8am) offers the best light and calmest conditions; afternoons bring stronger winds. June through October sees green season rains (heaviest Sept–Oct) but dramatically fewer tourists, lush landscapes, and occasional whale sightings offshore—September and October are particularly scenic if you tolerate afternoon downpours.
What Changes Through The Year
Dry Season (Dec–Apr)
From November through May, the Papagayo winds are exceptionally strong, averaging 25 mph, creating premier kiteboarding and windsurfing conditions with exceptional visibility.
Green Season (May–Nov)
Outside November to May, wind conditions are not favorable for water sports, making the bay less suitable for the kiteboarding and windsurfing activities it is known for.
Getting There
From Liberia (approximately 90km south), take Route 1 north toward La Cruz, then follow local roads to Bahía Salinas. From La Cruz town, it is approximately 30km to the bay area.

Who This Is For
“Bahía Salinas experiences dramatically different conditions by season: the December-April dry season brings the world-class winds kiteboarding requires, but the green season (May-November) offers calmer waters, fewer crowds, and better chances of spotting whale sharks in deeper channels. Plan your visit timing around your intended water activity rather than just weather.”
