Swing, jump, and swim at a local favorite where a rope swing launches adventurers into crystal-clear turquoise waters beneath cascading waterfalls.
El Salto Rio Rope Swing is an exhilarating natural playground where the Fortuna River plunges into a turquoise swimming basin framed by lush canyon walls just minutes from La Fortuna's downtown. The iconic Tarzan-style rope swing invites swimmers to arc out over crystalline waters, while twin waterfalls cascade nearby, creating a raw and vibrant atmosphere that pulses with energy. Unlike more manicured attractions, this spot retains an authentic, untamed character—deep enough for cliff diving, intimate enough for a morning dip before crowds arrive. Located at the edge of town, it's easily accessible yet feels worlds away from the main tourist strip, making it ideal year-round though best visited in dry season when water clarity peaks.
You'll find an iconic Tarzan-style rope swing hanging from a jungle tree above a turquoise canyon pool formed by the Fortuna River, where you can swing out and dive into deep water framed by twin waterfalls and lush canyon walls. The site offers multiple ways to play: use the rope swing (requires strong grip strength and confident swimming), cliff-jump from 3–5 meter basalt walls, or explore quieter downstream pools by scrambling over river rocks. This is one of the few free public activities in the commercialized Arenal region, but arrive early to beat crowds, wear high-traction water shoes on slick volcanic rocks, and never leave valuables in your car—parking is unguarded on the roadside.
Best Time to Visit
Visit during the dry season (December–April) when water clarity peaks and crowds are manageable in early morning hours before downtown traffic arrives.
What Changes Through The Year
Dry Season (Dec–Apr)
Water clarity is at its best, making the turquoise swimming basin and underwater features most visible; this is the ideal season to visit.
Green Season (May–Nov)
Higher water levels from rainfall may affect water clarity and rope swing accessibility, though the site remains open year-round.
Getting There
From downtown La Fortuna, head south on Route 702 toward the La Fortuna Waterfall park. The site is located directly beneath the main concrete bridge spanning the Río Fortuna, approximately 1.5 kilometers (5-minute drive or 20-minute walk) south of downtown, just before the diagonal turn-off toward the commercialized waterfall park. Park on the narrow unpaved dirt pull-offs along the road just before the bridge.
