Enchanting Cloud Forest Reserve, where misty trails, towering trees, and extraordinary wildlife create one of the world’s most magical natural experiences.
Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve stands as one of the world's most biodiverse ecosystems, where persistent mist wraps ancient trees in perpetual mystery and transforms the landscape into something otherworldly. Protected since 1972 and privately managed by the Tropical Science Center, this 4,000-hectare sanctuary preserves a cloud forest ecosystem so rare it comprises less than 1% of the planet's forests. Here, resplendent quetzals flit through emerald canopy, howler monkeys chorus at dawn, and the forest floor pulses with life beneath layers of moss and ferns. Visit early morning or during the rainy season (May-November) when mist clings heaviest to the mountains, creating an almost supernatural atmosphere. The reserve's well-maintained trails reward patient observers with encounters found nowhere else on Earth.
Walk through one of Earth's rarest ecosystems—a 4,000-hectare cloud forest where persistent mist cloaks ancient trees and creates an otherworldly atmosphere; only 2% of the reserve is open to visitors on well-maintained trails. Spot the resplendent quetzal, howler monkeys, jaguars, pumas, and over 500 bird species across eight distinct biological zones, along with extraordinary concentrations of orchids and ferns. Cross the famous 100-meter suspended canopy bridge on the Wilford Guindon trail to walk at treetop height, or reach La Ventana viewpoint on the continental divide for simultaneous views of both Atlantic and Pacific watersheds. Book your entry online in advance—the reserve uses strict hourly capacity limits to protect the ecosystem, and private vehicles cannot access the main entrance directly.
Best Time to Visit
Visit during the rainy season (May–November) when mist clings heaviest to the mountains, or come early morning any time of year for the most atmospheric conditions and active wildlife.
What Changes Through The Year
Dry Season (Dec–Apr)
Dry season (December–April) brings clearer skies and better visibility at viewpoints like La Ventana, though mist is less persistent and the forest loses some of its mystical quality.
Green Season (May–Nov)
Green season (May–November) brings constant mist, lush vegetation, and the heaviest atmospheric conditions; trails are wetter and more slippery but the forest feels most alive and otherworldly.
Getting There
The reserve is located approximately 6 kilometers east of Santa Elena town center in Monteverde, Puntarenas Province, along the Tilarán Mountain Range.
