A model for ecotourism and habitat restoration in northern Costa Rica.
“The mist tends to settle here early”
Tapir Valley Nature Reserve is a privately managed ecological sanctuary in northern Costa Rica where restored rainforest thrives across over 100 hectares of protected land. Located near Bijagua de Upala along the road to Tenorio Volcano National Park, this intimate reserve offers guided wildlife tours designed around conservation principles rather than mass tourism. Visitors encounter tapirs, coatis, howler monkeys, and numerous bird species in their natural habitat, while the misty jungle canopy creates an immersive rainforest experience. The reserve's small-group approach and focus on education make it ideal for those seeking authentic wildlife observation away from crowded tourist routes.
All visits are by prior reservation and led by local naturalist guides through well-maintained trails across primary and secondary rainforest, with the option of day or night tours to encounter tapirs, coatis, howler monkeys, toucans, and over 440 bird species. The reserve operates off-grid without electricity or mobile signal, creating complete immersion in nature with observation platforms and rest areas positioned throughout the 100+ hectares of restored rainforest. Small-group capacity is intentionally limited to preserve natural wildlife behavior, making this a respectful alternative to crowded tourism routes in the region.
