A unique waterfall where water flows down a natural rock slide into a crystal-clear swimming pool surrounded by lush mountain scenery.
“The mist tends to settle here early”
Catarata San Gabriel defies the typical waterfall experience with its distinctive natural stone slide—a broad, gently sloping rock face that channels water into a crystalline swimming pool rather than plunging vertically. Nestled within a private coffee estate in the rural Pejibaye region of Pérez Zeledón, this hidden gem combines the thrill of a natural tobogán with serene jungle surroundings and excellent swimming conditions. The on-site facilities speak to its history as a local tourist center, making it accessible despite its remote mountain location. Best visited during the rainy season when water flow is strongest, though the site remains magical year-round for those willing to seek it out.
The waterfall features a distinctive natural stone slide—a broad, angled rock face that channels water into a deep swimming pool rather than dropping vertically, creating a unique landscape for photography and swimming. Access involves a short 500–600 meter walk down a mostly paved path, but the return is a steep uphill climb; the wet stone base at the pool is exceptionally slick, so many visitors wear thick socks to avoid slipping. The site sits within a private working coffee estate with a locked gate—you must call the property manager at (+506) 8574-6202 upon arrival to have the gate opened (₡2,000 per person entry fee).
What Changes Through The Year
Green Season (May–Nov)
During peak rainy season, water flow is strongest and the waterfall is most spectacular; however, the pool water can take on a muddy, chocolate-brown color due to agricultural runoff from upper streams.
